MAXIMUS
a story full of meaning.
In ancient Rome, Maximus was the title given to the high priest leading the College of Pontiffs, the authority who defined sacred days, consecrated temples, appointed priests, and kept the Grande Annals. From Augustus onward, Roman emperors adopted the title, turning it into a symbol of supreme greatness. This spirit of magnitude was also refected in the Circus Maximus, the vast arena built in the 6th century BC by King Tarquin the Elder for horse and chariot races.
Why such a monumental tourbillon ?
Before grasping the purpose of the MAXIMUS, it’s vital to recall the role of a tourbillon, a rotating mechanism that counters gravity’s effect on the regulating organ, enhancing precision.
The MAXIMUS was born from three motives: its 27 mm cage enables a straight-line escapement for greater efficiency; its monumental, central design beneath a sapphire dome offers a theatrical view of time’s mechanics; and its integration across movement, dial, and case posed a rare horological feat. The cage completes one revolution every six minutes, slowing time into a mesmerizing spectacle.
The Six-Minute Marvel
At the heart of the MAXIMUS lies a monumental central tourbillon beneath a sapphire dome shaped like an amphitheater, allowing a clear view of every motion.
Integrating this structure into the movement, dial, and case was a major technical feat that upholds KERBEDANZ’s watchmaking mastery. The cage makes one rotation every six minutes, while curved hands trace the contour of twelve indexes inspired by Roman amphitheaters. The anti-reective sapphire dome and uted case evoke the harmony and grandeur of ancient Rome.
The hour and minute discs feature hand-curved hands that follow the contour of twelve indexes, inspired by Roman amphitheaters. The large anti-reective sapphire dome accommodates the tourbillon’s height while keeping perfect proportions, and the uted case profile recalls the colonnades of ancient Roman theaters.
The Winding Secret
The back of the MAXIMUS reveals a unique winding system placed above the transparent sapphire crystal.
Through this anti-reflective window, four parallel barrels can be seen driving a central wheel on ball bearings, generating the power needed for the 40-millimeter movement and its oversized tourbillon.
The Winding Secret
The 54-hour power reserve indicator is also located on the case back, since winding is done from this side rather than through the crown.
A special manual winding key with six curved arms, inspired by an octopus, activates the central gear system with a protected ratchet mechanism.
KRB-08 CALIBER
Tourbillon movement with manual winding by central mobile wheel mounted on a ball bearing indicating hours, minutes and power reserve.
